Hundreds of thousands of Italians living on the slopes of a volcano. Or in landslide risk areas, or even in buildings constructed in areas reclaimed from rivers and streams. But on these issues "still excessive reflected insensitivity and a lack of awareness." The head of the Civil Protection Franco Gabrielli, presenting the new risk scenarios about Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei, reiterates the need for a cultural change in terms of prevention, both by institutions and citizens. "In the area of Campi Flegrei - he said - the percentage of people who do not know the risk of that, literally, is sitting, reaching percentages between 70 and 80%." This "callousness - adds - often results in an inadequate attitude of the institutions" which, however, have a duty to raise awareness among citizens. "And 'useless to be messianic waiting of a national plan by the central government - said Gabrielli - the national plan is nothing but the finding of the sector plans that each institution has to do."
